CONCEPT
MezzAHome could improve the lives of 1.2 million refugees in urban areas in Europe. This self-supporting modular system can be inserted into abandoned buildings. Supported by customizable furniture units, the system can adapt to different sizes and family needs. MezzAHome maximizes functionality within small spaces. As most migrants are Muslims, their praying culture and privacy between male and female family members are taken on board in the design. Traditional timber construction means the home can be built in less than 24 hours. Dispersal of the shelters across the city fosters integration. Job opportunities are created, economic recovery is boosted, and disadvantaged districts are revitalized. Property owners benefit from the restoration and maintenance of abandoned buildings.
