Infoviz researcher and inventor Santiago Ortiz is working on what he calls visual data science. His aim is to use data visualization as a tool for analysis of, for instance, economic figures. Like the recent interactive visualization of all World Food Programme funding flows among countries through the last 10 years.

Ortiz, who was born in Colombia and works in Barcelona, uses his background in mathematics and complexity sciences to push the boundaries of information visualization and data based story telling. In a talk at Visualized conference in New York he showed some of his recent work, including a stunning guide that helps to navigate Wikipedia and an intriguing analysis of the performances of S&P 500 companies over a period of ten years in relation to taxes paid (at 22:10 in the talk).
